Originally from Spain, the Gaja family settled in the Italian Piedmont as tavern keepers. It was not until 1859 that Giovani Gaja created the Gaja winery in the Langhe region with 2 hectares of vines! At first he sold his wines to the tavern, then to the Italian army.

At that time, Barbaresco did not yet enjoy the reputation it has today. Like the Italian vineyards of the time, the region was poorly organised and ill-equipped, producing wines of varying quality for the local market.
