LEOVILLE BARTON

Robert Parker

91+/100 Drink: 2020 - 2035

Not surprisingly, this wine is closed, masculine, but super-rich, with a denser, more complete and full-bodied style than its sibling, Langoa Barton. Some toasty vanillin is apparent in the black currant aromas intermixed with tobacco leaf, cedar, and spice box. The wine is full-bodied and has a boatload of tannin, not unusual for this estate, as well as an impressively pure, long finish. Everything is here, but this wine, made with uncompromising vision, is meant to be cellared for an exceptionally long period of time. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035.

18/20 Drink 2012-26

Very deep purple right out to rim. Big, big difference between this and Clos du Marquis on the nose – completely different. Rather opulent even. Rich and very fine and intense and certainly pulling out all the stops! There’s finesse here. Even Las Cases is not trying to be big and tough this year. Trying for suppleness and fully ripe fruit. Very lively and fine tannins. Amazing nose even though not that much alcohol. Very neat long finish.

Neal Martin

92-93/100

The nose is closed at the moment, but gradually unfurls to reveal some lovely brambly fruit, cedar, blueberry and briary. The palate is very harmonious and natural, perfectly judged acidity; blackberry, touch of espresso and brine in the middle, leafier and smoky towards the finish which might be a touch more dry than I would like. Still a lovely Leoville-Barton surfeit with charm. Tasted February 2008.

Château Léoville Barton-2ème Cru Classé en 1855-Appellation Saint Julien
Château Léoville Barton

Château Leoville Barton is the third (and smallest) element of the famous trio of Saint Julien properties that 200 years ago formed one estate (Château Leoville) and has been the property of the illustrious Barton family since 1836. The family has been involved in the wine trade since 1723 when Irishman, Hugh Barton, bought part of the Léoville vineyards, before joining forces with Daniel Guestier in 1725 to create the famous Barton & Guestier negociant. Ronald Barton inherited the property in 1927 and passed it on to his nephew, Anthony, in 1983.

Thanks to Anthony Barton’s far-sighted vision, Château Leoville Barton, has been transformed to one of the best value wines amoung the best of Saint Julien.

Chateau Léoville Barton also produce a 3rd Classified Growth, Langoa Barton, which is vinified and matured in exactly the same way and the differences are attributed to the difference of soil and exposure of their respective vineyard blocks. For years, Langoa Barton was considered as slightly lighter and more forward than Léoville, however, in the last decade it has become noticeably deeper in colour and richer and more concentrated on the palate. Today, Langoa Barton is often regarded as the equal of Léoville.
