LAFITE ROTHSCHILD

Robert Parker

97+/100 Drink: 2014 - 2035

Lafite’s severe selection process (42% made it into the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wine boasting an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, truffles, lead pencil shavings, and sensationally sweet, ripe black currant and cedar notes. A wine of extraordinary intensity, texture, and depth with silky tannins as well as awesome concentration, this has turned out to be a remarkable Lafite Rothschild that should be drinkable much earlier than the 2005, but age for three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2035+.

18.5/20 Drink 2018-32

40% of the harvest went into the grand vin.
Less blue than Duhart with mid concentration. Very healthy opulent concentrated crimson. A particular spice to this vintage on the nose. Crisp and racy and beautifully balanced on the palate – possibly the most complete wine so far. Just caresses the palate and only on the finish shows you quite how much (notably ripe) tannin there is underneath. Remarkably compact. Lovely freshness without any greenness or angularity.

94-96/100 Drink -

This has a great nose of blackberry, sandalwood, raspberry and red cherry - very harmonious with great delineation. The palate is very harmonious, brilliant definition and tension, lovely poise with bright black fruits, minerals, limestone, hints of violets and bilberry towards the finish. This is much better than I recall at en primeur and shows great potential. Tasted February 2008.

Château Lafite Rothschild-1er Cru Classé en 1855-Appellation Pauillac
Château Lafite Rothschild

Without any doubt the famous wine in Bordeaux – and not without reason, as it was classified as Premier des Premiers Crus (first of the first) in the 1855 Classification.

Château Lafite is one of the three unquestioned top wines of Pauillac, together with Latour and Mouton-Rothschild. Predominantly situated around the chateau, the domain has the particularity of also including, by special “derogation”, a parcel situated in the commune of Saint Estèphe – but as this chateau is held in such high esteem by the Bordelais, this slight bend in the rules is overlooked.

Like all great Bordeaux wines, Château Lafite possesses a truly aristocratic personality that often requires several decades before reaching full maturity. Its characteristic bouquet of cedar, almond and violet with a delicate mineral hint – referred to by some as “black graphite” – is underlined by tannins of supreme elegance and exceptional balance and sweetness.
