English Version Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (171), June 2007: 93/100

One can’t say enough about the efforts Bruno Borie is pouring into this wonderful estate that I have often called the “Lafite Rothschild of St.-Julien.” An undeniable success, the 2004 Ducru boasts sweet aromas of creme de cassis, spring flowers, pain grille, licorice, and road tar. This pure, medium-bodied wine possesses moderately high tannin, superb concentration, good sweetness, and low acidity. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 25 years.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator (April 05), April 2005: 92-94/100

Really fresh and long. Full-bodied, yet balanced and silky. Lots of Cabernet character, with currants and earth. Beautiful. Refined yet muscular. This is a big improvement, like the 2003. Let's wait and see.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, August 2005: 16,5/20

Meaty, sweet nose. Not very St Julien at all - a bit more exaggerated and fleshy than traditional. Big, bold and a bit of a formless blob. Exaggerated acidity. As though the wine were concentrated even. Not integrated. I must say I don't like this new style. It seems to bear little relation to Ducru style. Very, very dry tannins on the finish.

Château Ducru Beaucaillou-2ème Cru Classé en 1855-Appellation Saint Julien
Château Ducru Beaucaillou

Situated, as the name suggests, on an outcrop of deep graves and stretching over 50 hectares, this is one of the most beautiful sites of the Medoc. Planted with 65% of Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% of Merlot, 5% of Cabernet Franc and 5% of Petit Verdot, this domaine is considered by many to be the quintessence of Bordeaux, particularly the Medoc. Attentive care by the owner, Bruno Borie, meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards and an uncompromising selection of fruit is the key to this supremely elegant and balanced wine that often needs ten years of so before revealing its full character.
